What Does This Office Do?

The Office of Public Affairs & Volunteers

  • recruits and coordinates volunteers
  • partners with Charleston Volunteers for Literacy, First Tee of Charleston, Yoga Benefits, and other organizations committed to providing opportunities for our students
  • works with Trident United Way to foster and coordinate CCSD's students involvement with TriCounty Youth Service Day
  • oversees and supports School Improvement Councils
  • interfaces with the Charleston legislative delegation and other governmental entities in the Charleston County area
  • chairs the Lowcountry Literacy Roundtable

What Are CCSD's Volunteer Opportunities?

MemmingerDid you know that in the 2010-2011 school year, Charleston County School District (CCSD) had approximately 6,200 volunteers working across the district- all committed to the district's students and schools? CCSD offers numerous opportunities for community members, businesses, faith-based partners, and other organizations to become involved. Volunteer positions include:

  • mentoring (with an individual or group of students)
  • being a career advocate
  • serving as a lunch buddy
  • providing tutoring or other academic support during or after school hours (including the Charleston Book Buddies literacy program)       
  • coaching
  • assisting with technology       
  • being a classroom speaker, assisting a teacher in the classroom, or reading to a class  
  • helping in a school clinic or attendance/main office
  • donating time or resources for special events

How Can I Get Involved?

  • Volunteer opportunities are currently available with the Charleston Marathon. Learn more!
  • If you are interested in a specific opportunity or school, please download and complete CCSD's 2011-2012 Volunteer Application, and return it directly to the school.

  • Lowcountry Literacy Roundtable In recognition of the profound impact of illiteracy in our community, the Lowcountry Literacy Roundtable was formed as a collaborative effort to focus attention on the critical importance of high levels of literacy across the community and facilitating the eradication of illiteracy.
